March 25, 2020
DID YOU KNOW: Babies develop tooth buds while they are still in their mother’s womb. However, the teeth does not erupt until they are around 5 months old.
Your child should come for a dental consultation as soon as the teeth starts showing.

Reasons for a dental consultation:

  • To ensure dental problems are addressed as soon as possible.
  • Dental caries can be prevented ensuring no extractions and/or abscesses.
  • Promote better chewing, speech and confidence
  • Oral cancers can be detected and treated early.

Why small (periapical) x-rays are important:

  • We take these at each check-up or during root-canal treatments
  • To detect why teeth are painful
  • To detect dental caries early
  • Annual x-rays can be compared to detect abnormalities

Why the big (Panorex) x-ray is important

  • We do a full examination of the teeth, roots and surrounding structures
  • To detect any abnormalities in the bone surrounding the teeth
  • To detect any bone diseases
  • Any TM-Joint problems can be detected early
  • To see impacted teeth clearly and refer to the maxilla-facial surgeon

What you can expect during a consultation/check-up appointment:

  • We do a physical/clinical examination of the whole mouth and peri-oral tissues
  • We do a clinical examination of each individual tooth and all its surfaces
  • We check the gums
  • After the clinical exam, we take x-rays which consist of small x-rays also known as periapical radiographs and a big x-ray also known as a Panorex radiograph
  • We try to address and treat the main complaint during this first appointment, thus making a 60 minute appointment would allow us to consult and treat in one visit
  • A treatment plan will be communicated verbally and should the patient require a quotation, we will do our utmost best to do one within one week, which can be handed to the medical aid for authorization and approval.
  • We will advise the amount of follow-up appointments that will be needed to finish the treatment plan
  • We will refer should you require specialist treatment
